How to Open PDFs in PDF Engineer Instead of Adobe Acrobat on Windows
A drawing can reach Acrobat in several ways: a double-click in File Explorer, a browser extension, or Acrobat’s own download integration. Work through the settings below so a supplier drawing opens where you want to review it.

The short answer
Set PDF Engineer as the Windows default for .pdf files, then turn off Acrobat’s separate downloaded-PDF auto-open preference. If a browser extension still sends documents to Acrobat, check that extension too.
These instructions are for Windows PCs. Start with Windows 11; the File Explorer method below also covers Windows 10. Browser and app labels can vary by version.
Set PDF Engineer as the default PDF app in Windows
Install PDF Engineer for Windows first, then set its PDF association:
- Press Windows + I and open Apps > Default apps.
- On Windows 11, search for .pdf in the file-type search box and select the current app.
- Choose PDF Engineer and confirm with Set default or the confirmation button shown.
Alternatively, right-click a saved PDF in File Explorer, select Open with > Choose another app, pick PDF Engineer, and choose Always. On Windows 10, check Always use this app to open .pdf files, then select OK.
For more detail, see the Windows default PDF app guide. Changing the association leaves the contents of your drawings intact.
Turn off Acrobat’s automatic opening of downloaded PDFs
If Acrobat launches as soon as a download finishes, change this preference inside the desktop app. Adobe documents this integration for Chrome and Microsoft Edge on Windows.
- Open Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader and press Ctrl + K to open Preferences.
- Select General in the left pane.
- Clear the option labeled Always open PDFs downloaded from the web.
- Select OK, then download another PDF to test the change.
The setting is separate from the Windows default and the Acrobat browser extension. If your edition does not show it, continue with the Windows and extension checks; menu labels can differ by version.
Check the Adobe Acrobat browser extension
If a PDF still opens in an Acrobat browser tab, inspect the Adobe Acrobat extension. In Chrome, enter chrome://extensions in the address bar. In Edge, enter edge://extensions. Find Adobe Acrobat and turn the extension off if you do not want it handling PDFs.
You can also review its Open all PDFs in Acrobat option if your extension exposes it. Disabling the extension alone does not disable the desktop download preference above. Afterward, use the matching browser guide below to configure PDF downloads.
Check whether the browser also opens downloads automatically
Chrome can remember an automatic-open action for a file type. In its recent downloads list, right-click a downloaded PDF and clear the checked automatic-open option if you want downloads to wait until you open them. This is another setting to check when Acrobat appears immediately after a download.
Test a local file and a fresh download separately
First double-click a saved PDF in File Explorer. Then download a new PDF from the browser you normally use, find the saved file in Downloads, and open it. PDF Engineer should handle the saved file in both cases.
If only the download still triggers Acrobat, revisit its General preference and the browser integration. If the local file opens in Acrobat, revisit the Windows association. You can keep Acrobat installed for occasional tasks and select it through Open with when needed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to uninstall Adobe Acrobat?
No. Choose PDF Engineer for the .pdf file type and turn off any Acrobat integration you no longer want. Acrobat can remain installed.
Why does Acrobat open downloads when PDF Engineer is already the default?
Acrobat has its own downloaded-PDF auto-open preference. Check Preferences > General in the desktop app, as well as the browser’s extensions and download actions.
What if PDF Engineer is missing from the app list?
Confirm installation, open PDF Engineer once, and try Open with on a saved PDF again. On a managed computer, ask IT if app installation or default associations are restricted.
